And in that way it works, I can see that. With any film that's based on a true story, there are always questions and curiosities about authenticity. So those are the three elements. And I think it's because he felt very insecure. And I totally separated it. It was awarded the Drama-Logue Critics' Award for Direction and the Los Angeles Drama Critics' Award for Ensemble Performance. Released in theaters 35 years ago, on Feb. 26, 1988, Bloodsport starred Van Damme as Frank Dux, a U.S. Army soldier who leaves the military to enter a fight-to-the-death martial arts tournament in . Menahem still thought it was a piece of s***.Blake Harris: How come?Sheldon Lettich: Well, I think this might answer your question. If you want to look it up, the SEAL manual number is K-431-0097.Blake Harris: Great. I don't know if the word "genius" is maybe taking it too high, but this is a very smart creative guy who is very much underappreciated. I was just at his house for New Year's Eve. They were going to do a movie called Night of the Leopard but there were some problems with getting the script so now they needed a new one. What I said to them [the LA Times] was that the only way you could get a hold of my records was to go to Federal Intelligence Court. One contribution I made to that script though was suggesting to Jean-Claude that he set the story in the past. The Robert DuBois version of Bloodsport made his live-action debut in the television series Supergirl, played by David St. Louis. I thought: Oh shit, I'm going to get my ass handed to me. I need to tell you about something that happened first. And a lot of pain, I guess, made me fight. A good example of that is Bloodsport. And interestingly enough, it was only after Jean-Claude did that to Sheldon that he testified on my behalf in the case for The Quest.Blake Harris: I understand. Plus, two cousins duke it out . So he started taking me to construction sites where I could get work. Especially when you believe that person is your friend.Frank Dux: Exactly. Or, better yet, where does that phrase come from?Frank Dux: Oh, that's easy. I thought Bloodsport was going to ruin my career when it was first cut and put together. They'll cover Frank Dux being a real man, Van Damme's soft baby buns, blindfolded tea training, the not so secret illegal Kumite martial-arts tournament, Ray Jackson, and much more. How conscious were youand I don't mean with that movie, but in generalabout that kind of formula. Mark was against it first, but I said, "Look, I can do a lot with this guy. Blake Harris: You had mentioned earlier on that Bloodsport sat on the shelf for two yearsFrank Dux: Yeah, for two years it sat on the shelf. I imagine it's hard to write a personal, firsthand account like that.Frank Dux: Here's the thing. "Tagline:The True Story of an American Ninja. But it was interesting because he's fighting Mike Stone and Mike Stone had reportedly 91 wins. We were on the set of Lionheart. But he was telling me about this tournament that he participated in where all the best fighters in the world showed up. The red one, the blue one, the black one. Rambo was always a reluctant badass.Sheldon Lettich: Yeah, you've really gotta push him to fight. And that's what I found out later in life. And so, you know, it was just a nice fit. Use promo code BONKERS for a free month. It's a psychological issue that, believe it or not, happens more than you would think. I want to make this movie, but I want you to make this movie with a real movie star and that's Michael Dudikoff." How are you going to get enough guys to fight against Michael who are even going to match his size? I wasn't going through anything like that myself, but it's therapeutic if you're able to recreate something that was an important part of your life and find a way to transmit it to other people. So flash forward ten years and I still had this notion of doing a film about the classic era of French Foreign Legion movie. Today on Variant, we give you the comic book. He's also said it under oath by the way and identified me. So I climbed up on the ledge with him. It wasn't until they allowed Jean-Claude to go in and recut the film that everything came together and it worked. Leon hired me to write a script, which Menahem ended up liking. So I have all these memories of falling down stairs and crawling on my knees. Get personalized recommendations, and learn where to watch across hundreds of streaming providers. And Leon was going to star in the movie, which we called The White House All Stars with the "White House" being a frat house at this college where all the football players lived. But they called me from Hong KongFrank and Jean-Claudelamenting the fact that "Mark DiSalle was messing up the script." And the two of them wrote this first draft. So I thought that it was a good idea to keep my options open. "Blake Harris: So what eventually changed Menahem's mind? I think that's why people really love it. He liked the authenticity in it and he'd heard about Tracers also. He threw a ridge-hand strike and he swept him at the same time. That's kind of how it appealed to me. Uh, no. I turned over the programs from the fights that we had in those days. I don't remember in detail what our first interaction was like, but we just kind of hit it off.Blake Harris: Was it weird for you at all, as a Vietnam veteran, to be working on a book about the war that was written by someone who hadn't been there?Sheldon Lettich: Well, I didn't know that at the time. In front of everybody. "He's a loser. After the fight, I go down to him and I said, "Hey, Mr. Moore, do you remember me?" It was just a way to release it. I didn't see it coming. It's not something that I'm interested in, but good luck." I'll show you a fighter and I'll fight you on the roof of the hotel!" Apparently, Stallone had read the same article and he was thinking exactly the same thing. He tells one where he says he met Menahem Golan [a producer on Bloodsport] at a restaurant and [Van Damme] threw out his legs and blah blah blah. And they've never wavered from that.Blake Harris: The kick?Sheldon Lettich: Yeah. And this felt very personal because the guys that were up on stage for those initial performances were pretty much playing themselves in many respects.Tracers, as the play would later be titled, was first presented as a work-in-progress performance piece on July 4, 1980. Like in South America it was called "Vale Tudo" and if the Japanese were running the event it was "Kumite San Soo," so this was a word that described them all.Blake Harris: That's interesting. Oh man, he f***ing hated that movie. Then for Double Impact we thought: let's just go for it. And one of those people was Sylvester Stallone, who had put the word out that he was looking for someone to help him write Rambo III. And the receipt was dated 1982, okay? Well, about the only thing they showed was a trophy receipt.Blake Harris: Which they claimed was evidence that the trophy you won was "at least partially made in the San Fernando Valley? They each got three chances to punch (and block) one another. What follows is the rest of our conversation Blake Harris: Given that you were mentioned several times in my interview with Frank, I can't help but start off by asking how surprised and/or frustrated you were to see the things he said?Sheldon Lettich: Frustrated? They could shut me out from sequel rights. And it's kind of funny because those are superfluous elements to the film. What made you such an extraordinary fighter?Frank Dux: Well, you know what? He owes you two more movies! And were just digging this whole notion of Jean-Claude being a Legionnaire. Everything you've just been telling me about this Kumite, that's a great idea for a movie. It was definitely a therapeutic experience for everyone involved with the play. Over the show's decade-long run, they've covered a lot of. With Bloodsport and Deadshot picking up each other weapons in battle. JCVD RE-EDITED THE MOVIE HIMSELF TO GET IT . So I was curious why you think you were so skilled? The ninja school if you want to call it that. A secret martial arts contest? "Blake Harris: Can I guess that the novel was The Last Rainbow [by Frank Dux]?Sheldon Lettich: Yup. Menahem had also seen the little 16mm movie [Firefight] I directed and was going to give me my first directing deal.Blake Harris: For you to direct a Lone Wolf McQuade sequel starring Leon Isaac Kennedy and Chuck Norris?Sheldon Lettich: Yes, except that Chuck didn't want to do it. You wanted to help him be successful. He had an answering machine at the time that had a limit of, like, 50 messages. That is not to say that the Tanaka name has no meaning. Because I think he's got a Walter Mitty syndrome. I remember us going back to his apartment and the thing was entirely full.Blake Harris: Did Menahem change his tune about Jean-Claude?Sheldon Lettich: Well, yes and no. In 1987's Superman #4, by John Byrne and Karl Kesel, Superman tried to stop Bloodsport's rampage through Metropolis. You know, Jean-Claude was totally overwhelmed when he got to work with Stallone on Expendables 2. So I suggested a version where Rambo tells Trautman, "Sorry, Colonel, I fought my war. They liked the idea, liked the script, and decided to go ahead and do it as a low-budget movie. The one thing that we did that made the film work so well is that we would do one "twinning shot" per scene. But here's a photo from the screening, so I guess at least one person wanted to have their photo taken with me. 8. He's demonstrating how to do a 1-inch punch and a 1-finger push-up. And the CIA and everyone is obligated to tell you? Find ratings and reviews for the newest movie and TV shows. How did that happen? Ian Fleming based his characters on real people. All that was missing was an actor to play Frank Dux. He wants to find a more peaceful path. "But I will say this," Lettich continued. And they weren't returning phone calls. And we ended up settling. And that's how I ended up co-writing Rambo III with him. And what really grabbed Sheldon's attention was the fights.Blake Harris: So what happened with the script? I never said that. When I was growing up, you couldn't even find "martial arts" in the encyclopedia. The Origins of Gladiatorial Games. The government did not know how much he knew about other covert operations, he said, so they placed information in his file to destroy his credibility. "But Sly," I said, "it really wouldn't work that way because one thing that's been established with Rambo is that he's the baddest motherf***er in the world, but he doesn't want to fight. And a lot of those worked well when Jean-Claude recut it.Blake Harris: I suspect that part of the reason they worked is because you, based on your experiences, were able to bring a certain authenticity to it.Frank Dux: I think so too. KUMITE! We even made a movie together, my 16mm short Firefight, which I gave him a major role in. But to my pleasant surprise, Lettich was a complete gentleman. I blame the success of Jurassic Park for this movie. And Menahem was dead set against it.Blake Harris: Why?Sheldon Lettich: [Laughing at the memory] His word for Jean-Claude was "poison." Bloodsport was produced by Cannon Films and released by Warner Bros. on 26 February 1988. What was all this camaraderie about? You know, where people go around wearing medals and talking about their fictional war exploits.Blake Harris: That actually makes for a good, non-Frank-related jumping off point. Bloodsport. I'm not talking our toes are over the edge. The film is partly based on unverified claims made by martial artist Frank Dux. So you have to get everyone on the same page and agree to make this movie. After directing Jean-Claude in Double Impact [1991] and Lionheart [1990] before that, was there any reason you didn't want to be involved with writing or directing?Sheldon Lettich: That was right after another movie I did called Only the Strong [1993] and I seemed to have a lot of other things going on. And they wouldn't show it to me. "Tagline:The True Story of an American Ninja, "All I request," Lettich started off by saying, "is that we try to keep discussion about Frank Dux to a minimum. Which kind of made Grant feel better about himself. One of these covert operatives was one Frank Dux. These targets included the planned mining of a Nicaraguan port and the planned sabotage of certain Nicaraguan installations including power stations and weapons depots, codenamed OPERATION CORDOBA HARBOR. You've gotta kidnap his friend. And Stallone felt the same way. Well, she'd seen it on TV, but she was too sick when the movie came out. And it's interesting because they hide that, you know? Jeez. We're not friends [anymore] and he does everything in his power to try and paint me as being a nutball or a kook because of it.Blake Harris: That's why I wanted to focus this piece on you, so you can tell the story in your own words.Frank Dux: So now you're starting to hear the real truth of the matter, you know what I mean? It's hard to call the young Van Damme's performance "good" in any traditional sense of the word, but . And, like I said, it got me my first agent, a guy named Harold Moskowitz[starts laughing] who, a little while later, was looking for help with another one of his clients. We expect embellishment, we condone narrative condensation and we celebrate character-driven points of view. And I'd imitate him.Blake Harris: Do you remember how old you were around this time?Frank Dux: I was 11 years old. Joseph Papp heard about it, so he brought the show to the Public Theatre in New York. People don't really know that about Lee, but he had one leg shorter than the other. I had them cut down so it would fit him because I'm a bigger guy. A lot of those shots came from the camera angles I had been directing. Look, Stallone was the biggest star in the world at the time and to even have a meeting with him was, to me, a huge honor. That kind of caught my fancy. What follows is a conversation with Sheldon Lettich, who was thescreenwriter ofthe movie Bloodsport. [laughing] Those old 80s trailers, that's what they'd say over and over again. Oh yeah! KUMITE! That was really my very first entry into the Writer's Guild.Blake Harris: Moving up the ranksSheldon Lettich: Yeah, and around this time I wrote a Vietnam screenplay that got me my first agent. It was a moment where you have to sit back and realize that sometimes when you think something's wrong, everything is going right. In this video, I speak with the Dan. He was the one who actually introduced me to beef and oyster sauce. I'm not gonna stoop to his level. And I said, "Okay, after dailies, I'll meet you up there." Did that piece directly lead to Bloodsport? I buy you dinner tonight." Menahem says, "Oh, Corsican Brothers, that's perfect for Jean-Claude! They were both pregnant at the same time. He was considered "unstoppable" at that time. And he did that to Sheldon several times. Not what's typically expected, which was: Jean-Claude's going to find these motherf***ers and beat the s*** out of them. Are you kidding me? But he had a great imagination, he had good ideas and he knew the martial arts world pretty well. He saw the script. And I can cite the evidence.Blake Harris: Looking backand considering what eventually happened after the film came outis there anything you could have done differently?Frank Dux: You know, it's part of life. Bloodsport Coming Soon to Fortnite - YouTube 0:00 / 1:00 Bloodsport Coming Soon to Fortnite Fortnite 11.5M subscribers 1.6M views 1 year ago #Bloodsport #Fortnite #FortniteBloodsport. I told Jean-Claude I might be getting the rights back to Corsican Brothers so he got Moshe on board. I never accused the military of doing it. The 20 episodes of How Did This Get Made listed below offer a taste of the world that the hosts have built. We Hate Movies podcast did Timecop for one of their eps, and likewise, it is one of their best eps. "Well, can I show you what I've learned since you taught me?" And we ran around like kids, just like kids, and he was showing me this beautiful art deco penthouse apartment in downtown L.A.Blake Harris: That's a great image. Three months later, it formally opened at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles to rave reviews. And he just started laughing and he says, "Frank, you're crazy. So Frank and I go to a theater and we were both blown away by Jean-Claude. Yet with Bloodsport, this was not the case. Live from Largo in L.A. they get into Samuel L. Jackson's infamous death scene, LL Cool J's relationship with his bird, Stellan Skarsgrd's new name, and how Saffron Burrows is the film's true villain. And at one of these construction sites, there was a guy doing martial arts. Do you recognize the guy all the way on the right? It was also seen by Viacom. It's a tale so amazing that two months after the film's release, it was dismissed by the L.A. Times as nothing but a fabricated "macho fantasy." And he was brought to our attention through Sheldon. Another thing was that had I co-directed The Quest with Jean-Claude, it might have contributed to a mistaken notion that Jean-Claude co-directed Lionheart and Double Impact with me. "The fact that Frank hasn't been involved with any movie since 1994 says something doesn't it? It's a sprawling ecosystem. We did not use CGI, that was only just starting to become popular, so we had to do everything optically. In 1993, Dux got beaten up by a guy in the first tournament, a guy by the name of "Nasty" Zane Frazier, who is known for knocking himself out when he and his opponent rolled out of the ring and hit the floor. Following his appearances in the two preceding sequels, Daniel Bernhardt returns in the new role of Agent John Keller, who goes into prison . It was "Dukes." And he did. And he knows it. The one who's putting up his "dux? I didn't understand. Along with Alexander Martin. To this point, on http://frankdux.net/facts/ there is a signed declaration by Lt. with Andy Griffith, where Barney Fife was getting picked on and so he goes to learn judo. To my face he's pretending to be my best buddy, but behind my back he's doing everything in his power to undermine me in my career and take credit for my work.Blake Harris: I'm really sorry to hear that.Frank Dux: And that's a typical Hollywood story, right? It was very time-consuming and it was not easy to match things up with the optical printer, but I thought we did a pretty good job of that. Using tech he got from Lex Luthor, Bloodsport teleported a rifle that fired Kryptonite needles into his hands and shot Superman with it. And he's in this movie called No Retreat, No Surrender. Blake Harris: The Black Belt article got a lot of attention and certainly must have piqued the interest of some folks in Hollywood. Plus the guy was just an idol of mine. So we pitched him Legionnaire, gave him the treatment and Ed went for it.Blake Harris: You mentioned that Columbia passed on Legionnaire because it didn't "stick with the Van Damme formula." In fact, I was born with my foot so pigeon-toed that it actually went backwards; my foot, it could go 180 degrees the other way. Because he's riding on the coattails of Jean-Claude. How blindsided were you when the piece came out?Frank Dux: Well, there was nothing I could do. Because we don't want our readers to be misinformed, Black Belt has a policy of strict verification of all facts pertaining to any article. But, Dux's version of the event is that Frazier . Thus, gladiatorial combats originally possessed a sacred significance. Occasionally he'd come by the studio. That's just point of the absurdity of the whole thing.Blake Harris: And, when you were there, how did the reporter respond to all this?Frank Dux: I embarrassed the hell out of him. Back then, things were so different. Sometimes we get answers to questions like these, and other times we do not. And that relationship led to other things down the road, as you know, but meanwhile my script Firebase was going around. Nobody clapped for Sheldon. The piece, entitled "Kumite: A Learning Experience," was written by editor John Stewart and begins with the following note: From time to time, Black Belt learns of unusual events or occurrences in the martial arts; events thateither because of their nature or because they occurred in the distant pastcannot be easily verified. I mean, he couldn't do a throw. That movie's terrible; I'm putting it straight to video. And I remember Mark telling us, "Menahem is thinking of casting this guy Gene Claude Van Damme. On Bloodsport, we got into it during one of the fight scenes. He took pride in the fact that he was all natural. I remember there was a stack of scripts lining the walltitles written on the spineand I notice one script in particular. And it misrepresents my responses. Not looking to find myself embroiled in the middle of a he-said, she-said war of words, I happily agreed to this request. And then Gary Sinese saw the play in New York and he wanted to put it on in Chicago. No. He didn't like it. Double Impact was financed, mostly, through pre-sales and, as it was structured, each of those companies also own a piece of the movie. I think it was Jean-Claude finally convinced them to allow him to do it. At that point, it was to their advantage. I was afraid to taste it, because I'm allergic to shellfish. And he ends up doing a test of speed with this guy named Vic Moore. It's risk free with Nord's 30 day money-back guarantee! This was significant not only because he wrote the screenplay for Bloodsport, but also because Dux had said some unflattering things about the writer. ).Blake Harris: That's great. And he did the helicopter kick in No Retreat, No Surrender and I was well known for my flying kicks and finishing guys off with my spinning flying kicks. (w/ Nicole Byer) 4/7/2023 More HDTGM all-star Nicole Byer (Grand Crew, Nailed It!) KUMITE! He was just polite. Thndrcougarfalcnbird. But Michael Dudikoff is like 6'2," and the problem was they wanted to film in Asia. He had a karate background. You said "we were working on a sequel." Nothing happened with that, but then he started paying me a little bit to write some scripts for him.Blake Harris: Did any of those get made?Sheldon Lettich: We got really close with one. If it's Stallone: no problem, he can kill me on screen at the end.Blake Harris: The ultimate complimentSheldon Lettich: Ha, yes.Blake Harris: Speaking of Jean-Claude, I imagine that you first met him around this time. They didn't have any proper uniforms. This is the kind of bond we had. The uniform they had for Jean-Claude was silk pajamas, these Chinese silk pajamas. Do you see what I'm saying? Are you guys still friendly?Sheldon Lettich: Oh yeah. He's got a lot of abilities. Though defeated, this wasn't the last the heroes of the DC Universe saw of Bloodsport. The film finds the Suicide Squad going on a mission to the fictional country of Corto Maltese to carry out a mission to destroy a secret installation housing a secret weapon known as Project Starfish. So my agent sent him Firebase and he responded very enthusiastically. Those were my uniforms. So the play was groundbreaking in some ways. I met this guy Sheldon Lettich, who had done a play called Tracers and we became friends. And then Hollywood got to him and he started showing signs of manic depression, you know?Blake Harris: In what way?Frank Dux: I'll never forget. And regardless of what any critics may say or believe, I don't think anyone would argue that you weren't extremely talented. I was going to say something like, "By the way, there's actually someone here who worked on the movie and he can maybe answer some of your questions" and he was going to come out and everyone would have went f***ing crazy. Or any agent's records? So he re-cut the fights, Michael restructured the movie and when we saw the next cut (which was quite a while later), the movie really worked. So he goes there on his own to rescue Troutman, and that pretty much became the movie.Blake Harris: That's a good point. IMDb is the world's most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. The whole martial arts thing. When. And that's why I kept it kind of fictional. So Frank put me on the phone with Jean-Claude and that was the first time I ever spoke to him. It's incredible." In this declaration, Commander Martin attests to the following: Frank Dux: As far as my military service goes, I should also mention that I'm named as a source contributor in the US Navy SEAL SPECWAR manual.
